What Are World Heritage Sites?A World Heritage Site is classified as a natural or man-made site, area, or structure recognized as being of Outstanding Universal Value and therefore as deserving special protection. Sites are nominated to and designated by the World Heritage Convention, an organization of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). New Lanark was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. You can read more about New Lanark and its Outstanding Universal Value here http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/429 UNESCO seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
