    Conserving & Promoting New Lanark

The Friends of New Lanark is a membership organisation and voluntary support group of people who are interested in helping preserve and promote New Lanark and its surroundings as a World Heritage Site.

The Friends of New Lanark work closely with the New Lanark Trust, the independent Scottish charity which is responsible for the restoration and revitalisation of the historic mills and village and the development of its many attractions. The current Chair of the Management Committee is Graham U'ren. Members of the committee bring a wide range of expertise and skill to its work. Our AGM each June, at which all are welcome, reviews our annual activities and is accompanied by lecture/presentation and social event.

  • What We Do
The Friends have supported or contributed to many developments in New Lanark and beyond.

We were responsible for some of the bronze plaques (with quotations from Owen’s writings) in the Roof Garden, and for plaques at historic sites in Glasgow associated with New Lanark founder, David Dale, notably at the site of his home in Charlotte Street near Glasgow Green. We helped with the Induction Loop Systems for the Visitor Centre exhibitions, sponsorship of the New Lanark Heritage Trail booklet, support for various publications, book launches and conferences, and the recently established search room/archive. Friends have also contributed to the volunteer programme on Open Days and at other events, organising, cataloguing and digitising material for the search room.

  • Robert Owen Commemorative Lecture
A major event in the Friend’s calendar is the annual Robert Owen Commemorative Lecture held each May around the anniversary of Owen’s birth.

The event is supported by the Friends with the help of the Open University and the New Lanark Trust. We have had many distinguished speakers on subjects as diverse as Owen and working class history, modern day co-operation and enterprise, sport and culture, eco-villages, and happiness. In celebrating Owen and his ideas we look forward as well as back. The Friends of New Lanark, together with the support of The Open University held the 15th Robert Owen Commemorative Lecture on Friday 25th May 2018. This year's subject was 'Goodness Gracious, Great Falls of Clyde' and was delivered by Graham U'ren, a Friend and long-time supporter of the group'.
