Volunteering

New Lanark has a fantastic team of volunteers from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. In 2014, New Lanark Trust was awarded 'Volunteer Friendly' status by Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire. This is a seal of approval given to organisations who have demonstrated excellence in managing and organising the volunteers they work with.

Anyone can join the volunteer team at New Lanark and there are a wide variety of areas in which you can help out, including:

The New Lanark Archive & Search Room
Volunteers in this area assist with the research, cataloguing, care and public promotion of our historic archive collection of artefacts, photographs, drawings, documents and oral histories. This is the perfect role for people interested in heritage and history, especially if you like nothing better than exploring old stuff and discovering new things! Click here to view the Archive Volunteer role description.

Events & Exhibitions
Our events & exhibitions volunteers help with the preparation and running of our 2017 Events & Exhibitions Programme at New Lanark. This includes diverse roles such as helping to steward the Great Tapestry of Scotland to becoming a Teddy Bear for our summertime ‘Big Picnic! Perfect if you enjoy working with people! Click here to view the Events & Exhibitions volunteer role descrption.

Crafts & Outreach
This is the perfect role for creative folk who love working with children and families. Our craft learning volunteers assist with craft workshops during school holiday periods, events at New Lanark which require crafts or children’s activities and educational activities for visitors throughout the year. Click here to view the Crafts & outreach volunteer role description.

Garden & Grounds
If you enjoy working in the great outdoors or are particularly green fingered, then this is the role for you! Volunteers in this area help with the ongoing horticultural and general maintenance of the outdoor areas at New Lanark, including Clearburn Natural Picnic & Play Area, the Roof Garden and the War Memorial Garden. Click here to view the Garden & Grounds volunteer role description.
Double Row - House History volunteer

House History
Working as part of the ‘Double Row’ restoration project, House History volunteers will be involved in researching the history of the families who lived in Double Row from 1900 until the 1970s when the final resident moved out. Volunteers will be based in the Search Room, which houses the New Lanark Archive but the role will also involve travel to other archives and research facilities in addition to travelling throughout Lanarkshire to carry out Oral History interviews (where relevant). Click here to view the House History volunteer role description.

Marketing at Visit Scotland
Marketing
Marketing volunteers will form a part of the New Lanark Heritage Team and will be involved in the promotion of the World Heritage Site and all of its features including a visitor centre, café, 2 shops, hotel, hostel, health & fitness club, wool sales and ice cream.
