Back in Time at New Lanark

Sunday 17th July
New Lanark World Heritage Site
Open 11am-4pm. Free entry*

New Lanark's Back in Time Day

Visitors will be able to ‘step back in time’ and experience what life would have been like for a millworker living and working in the mill village in the 1820s. A wide selection of free activities will be available, including period dancing classes, music, crafts, games, storytelling and the Clyde 1 ‘dress up’ Photo booth. Throughout the day visitors will be able to enjoy Living History displays and perhaps even meet Robert Owen himself!

There will also be a range of craft demonstrations, from basket weaving to traditional tile making and the food demonstration stall will be serving up samples of traditional millworker fayre including porridge and barley broth.
In a rare treat for the 1820’s villagers, a Falconry Display will be visiting on the day and ponies will be in the village accompanied by their owner who will be talking about the role of horses in the early 19th century.

This event is part of a Townscape Heritage / Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme which is taking place at New Lanark over the next four years. Phase 1 of this large-scale regeneration project is the restoration of Double Row, a Category A listed former millworkers’ tenement block, built in the 1790s. A range of heritage-based community activities will be delivered in parallel to the construction works including the ‘Back in Time Day’ on Sunday 17th July.

Total costs for this large scale regeneration project are over £4m. The two main funders are the Heritage Lottery Fund through its Townscape Heritage (TH) programme and Historic Environment Scotland through its Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS). Additional funding has been secured from the Renewable Energy Fund (South Lanarkshire Council), The Wolfson Foundation and New Lanark Trust.
