Friends of New Lanark is a voluntary support group of people who are interested in the work of the New Lanark Trust, an independent Scottish charity which is responsible for the restoration and revitalisation of New Lanark.

The village, founded by Scots entrepreneur David Dale in 1785, became internationally famous under the enlightened management of Dale's son-in-law Robert Owen, the social and educational pioneer. Between 1800 and 1825, he introduced ideas and opportunities for his workers that were at least a hundred years ahead of their time.In 1968 the mills were closed and the village fell into decay, but it is now the subject of one of the largest restoration projects in Europe. The international significance of New Lanark has been recognised by its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Each year, the Friends make a donation to support projects at New Lanark. In the past these have been Induction Loop systems for the Visitor Centre exhibitions, bronze plaques with quotations from Robert Owen's writings for the Roof Garden, and sponsorship of the New Lanark Heritage Trail guide-book.

The ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING was held on 26 June 2011 in the Institute for the Formation of Character, New Lanark. Annual events organised by the Friends include the Robert Owen Commemoration Lecture. For more information click here or email lorna.davidson@newlanark.org Click to edit this page
