Friends of New Lanark is a voluntary support group of people who are interested in the work of the New Lanark Conservation Trust, an independent Scottish charity which is responsible for the restoration and revitalisation of New Lanark. New Lanark was built in the late 18th century deep in a beautiful valley below the ancient market town of Lanark. It was a new industrial settlement, designed to take advantage of water power from the River Clyde. Founded in 1785 by David Dale, a prosperous Glasgow merchant, New Lanark became one of the world's largest cotton-manufacturing centres and supported 2,500 people.

The village became internationally famous under the enlightened management of Dale's son-in-law Robert Owen, the social and educational pioneer. Between 1800 and 1825, he introduced ideas and opportunities for his workers that were at least a hundred years ahead of their time. He abolished child labour and corporal punishment, provided free medical care and progressive education for the whole community, and founded the Village Store, now regarded as one of the roots of the international Co-operative movement. In 1968 the mills were closed and the village fell into decay, but it is now the subject of one of the largest restoration projects in Europe. The significance of New Lanark has been recognised by its designation as a World Heritage Site. Click to edit this page
